Jiminy is a very special wether (fixed boy) at our farm.
Jiminy (Jim) was born with his brother, Flower, and unfortunately they lost their mom, Leeloo, shortly after they were born. We bottle raised them, and Jim LOVED his bottle. He was such an amazing little goat, and we decided that we wanted to keep him and his brother on our farm permanently (in honour of Leeloo, as she was our first goat ever). We had both of the boys fixed, and they lived happily with the does. However, in late 2019, Jim started to develop some health issues. We would find him laying on his side in the stall, and in distress. And then he started to lose weight (a lot of weight). We ran all sorts of tests on him, but the vets couldn’t find any signs of any diseases or other issues causing his health problems. We did find he was urinating a lot and combined with some of the high blood sugar readings and other symptoms, we finally decided to try him on insulin. To all of our surprise, this worked! Jim started to gain back weight, and is now doing great (but still gets a daily insulin shot). So not only is he our special goat, but he is the only diagnosed goat (at least in North America at the time) with Diabetes! Jim’s sire was our Nigerian Dwarf buck, Stanley and he is an unregistered Nigerian Dwarf wether.
